The wellness industry- and it has become just that- has us believe that self-care is to buy this thing and download that app. That spending a bundle on a spa day, wearing a plush robe and sipping whatever-infused water for one afternoon equals self-care.
The self-care tools you’ll learn in this series - meditation, body scans, nature time- actually help us release material goods. Create space to just be. With our selves.
That is the hard part. To spend time with ourselves, to meet ourselves where we are, can be really uncomfortable at first. Being asked to spend time without our screens, without our things, with our own thoughts, can be scary. This is why we take baby steps. Do it in community. Over a period of time.
As we add these holistic self-care tools to our daily life, we create space to just be. Time to know and grow our selves. To use self-care to move towards self-love.
Each class is part relaxation and part discussion. There is a home practice component as well.
The relaxation portion includes gentle stretches and restorative poses, guided meditation with crystals, Reiki, mini-massage and more.
We then discuss different aspects of self-care so we can get to know our own history and forge our own paths to a long-term self-care practice. Recognizing why we are doing this work helps us stay focused and committed.
The home practice allows us to build a daily self-care routine and tweak it over the series (which usually last 6 weeks).
Best of all, we are doing this in safe QTPOC community. This, in itself, is healing.
I’ve learned that doing this work as a one-off workshop simply doesn’t work. We need support. Community. Time and space to build our practice. Time and space to do our practice.
I structure the series like this super fun and effective boot camp I once did: I would re-enroll each month so that over time, not only did I grow strong and feel energized, but I really learned to tweak exercises so they worked for me and do them better and better. I developed a deeper understanding of my body and a new relationship to my own inner and outer strength.
In this series, we continue to uncover layers of self-care, layers of our own journey. 6 weeks is a great start. Taking a few weeks off, trying it on your own and then coming back for another round is a great way to scaffold self-care into your life.
